This Week in SHOWCASE #9

by Bruce Bethke
Editor, Stupefying Stories

Welcome to issue #9 of SHOWCASE, the free webzine companion to STUPEFYING STORIES magazine and the STUPEFYING STORIES PRESENTS anthology series. The big news this week is that we’ve just released TWO: The 2nd Annual Horror Special—and more about that in a moment—but first I’d like to try something different, and lead-off with the stories. This week SHOWCASE is proud to bring you:

“Jackie, We Hardly Knew Ye,” by Carly Berg

What really happened on that terrible November day in Dallas? Fifty years later, the truth can finally be revealed...

“Tempora Mutantur,” by Anatoly Belilovsky

In April of 2848 a scientific expedition set sail from Stalinpour, to brave the crocodile-infested coast of Greenland and explore the fabled lost city of Broke-Land. But even the ancient legends could not prepare them for the horror they found there...

“White,” by Jennifer Davis

When she joined the department the older cops warned her there would be one case she would never forget; one crime she could never solve. Then it came in the form of a beautiful young Jane Doe, found murdered by poison, in a crime scene scrubbed so clean there was only one puzzling clue...

“Happily Ever After,” by Edward Ahern

It was just a simple Sunday dinner, but when her husband Prince Fürst insisted on inviting her wicked stepmother, Princess Blanche felt entitled to invite the evil witch as well. After all, what could possibly go wrong?

“Lessons Learned From My Fifth Attempt to Conquer the World,” by Jason Andrew

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Board of Directors, esteemed colleagues: there may be some opportunities for improvement here...

Just released: TWO: The 2nd Annual Horror Special

STUPEFYING STORIES is thrilled (and more than just a little relieved) to announce the release of TWO: The 2nd Annual Horror Special. This is one of the biggest and best collections of horror stories we've ever assembled, containing sixteen fresh and exciting new tales—fourteen short stories and two complete novelettes—a baker’s dozen and then some of ghosties and ghoulies, vampires and zombies, monsters and mayhem, and things that go bump in the night! Edited by Philip K. Dick Award-winner Bruce Bethke, TWO features:

  • “Second to Last Stop” by Evan Dicken
  • “Cabrón” by Jóse Iriarte
  • “Blood and Water” by Rose Blackthorn
  • “Gris-Gris for a Mal Pris” by Rebecca Roland
  • “Zombie Angst, or How to Pair Human Brains With a Good Chianti” by Stone Showers
  • “Wall” by Yukimi Ogawa
  • “A is for Android” by Holly A. Cave
  • “The Things That Perish Along The Way” by Keith Rosson
